ECONOMYNEXT – The head of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (CA Sri Lanka) has underscored the importance of adhering to ethics when members discharge their professional duties.

“Being a professional is a privilege and it will bring both challenges and rewards,”said Lasantha Wickremasinghe, President of CA Sri Lanka.

“However, above all, being a professional is a responsibility and one must execute one’s responsibilities diligently and ethically.”

Wickremasinghe said that the success of the profession depends on the respect that chartered accountants receive.

CA Sri Lanka members are in demand because they are good at what they do and because they discharge their duties ethically and respectfully, he told the institute’s 2016 Annual Convocation.

“As new members of CA Sri Lanka, you are the new guardians of our profession as well as our institute, so remember to achieve success without compromising on your professional ethics and values,” he said.

The institute conferred the distinguished Associate Chartered Accountants status, a mid-tier qualification, on 318 new members at the convocation, signifying the completion of their globally recognized professional qualification in chartered accounting offered by CA Sri Lanka.

How many professionals have been struck off the role due to malpractice and other highly questionable acts during the last 36 years or so. How does this compare with the respected and recognised main bodies overseas our professional associations are affiliated to.

One example, is the connivance of these members with certain business interest to deliberately undervalue state entities that were privatised. The plantations and of the privatised marine business of the port and acquisition of land.
