Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to triple bilateral trade

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka and Bangladesh had focussed attention on tripling current annual bilateral trade of 142 million dollars in the next few years, during a business forum in Dhaka attended by visiting President Maithripala Sirisena.

The business forum was also attended by Sri Lanka foreign minister Ravi Karunanayake and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdul Hassan Mahmood Ali, a statement from the President's office said.

Sri Lanka had invested in gas, banking, and apparel sectors in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi businesses were also invited to invest in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are also planning a trade deal and a special economic zone.

The two countries also signed 12 agreements covering economic co-operation, quality standards, agriculture, information technology, radio and television, shipping, setting up a foreign service officers training centre and a deal on an apparel firm.

There was also an agreement to exempt rulers and rulers' servants from of both countries from visa requirements.

There was no mention whether any attempt was made to expand the travel freedoms on Sri Lanka citizens and enhance the value of the country's passport. Colombo/July15/2017)
