Sri Lanka president opens submarine cable station

ECONOMYNEXT - Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena had formally opened a landing station that will link the country to the latest submarine cable linking South East Asia, to Europe via the Middle East.
The South East Asia - Middle East - Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) cable lands in Galle in the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has been part of the SEA-ME-WE consortium from its early days. The latest cable will link 17 countrie and is capable of carrying 25 terrabitsper second (Tbps).
President Sirisena opened the cable landing station with Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera who created a telecom revolution in the country in the early 1990s as liberilizaign the sector as minister.
