Sri Lanka to receive urgent fertiliser shipment tonight

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka expects to begin unloading a ship load of fertiliser from Pakistan, urgently required to tide over a shortage that has hit farmers in the cultivation season, a government spokesman said.

The shipment was ordered from Pakistan as an urgent measure, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne told a news conference.

“We expect to begin unloading the first shipment of 30,000 tonnes tonight,” he said. “Another shipment of 40,000 tonnes is expected nest week. Then the shortage would be over.”

The government has arranged for 200 trucks to enter the port to unload the fertiliser and distribute them to the areas most affected by the shortage.

The shortage arose after repeated delays in tenders with some bids having to be cancelled and a ban on fertiliser exports from Pakistan.
