ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved the setting up of a science, technology and innovation (STI) coordinating authority to co-ordinate the work of several research and development outfits, a spokesman said.

The authority, proposed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research, will facilitate the coordination of research and development activities administered by 21 ministries and about 80 research institutions, he said.

The move aims to maximise return on investments on science, technology and innovation for the country’s socio-economic development, he added.

According to the proposal by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research, the National Science, Technology and Innovation Authority, called NASTICA, will connect over 80 scattered research outfits and facilities supervised by 21 ministries.

The current status has led to a lack of national direction and duplication of R&D, it said.

The authority will be similar to India’s National Innovation Foundation, Office of science, Technology and Innovation of South Korea and the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
