ECONOMYNEXT - The people of Sri Lanka has won human rights, democracy as a result of the actions of the current administration and the European Union is restoring GSP+ free trade access to the country, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
"This is not just a victory for the government," Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said. "This is a victory for all Sri Lankans."
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said with the restoration of GSP+ the access of Sri Lankan exports including apparel to the EU will be expanded creating more jobs.
GSP+ free trade access was withdrawn from Sri Lanka due to the weakening freedoms and just rule of law under the ousted Rajapaksa regime.
In a society the state which has a monopoly on violence through the police, military and jails and armed robbers have the power to rob the freedoms and property of unarmed citizens.
Sri Lanka inherited a European style nation state with a standing army, police and a parliament with law-making powers. Arbitrary powers of the state and rulers were strengthened by a constitution enacted in 1979.
There are expectations that the ability of rulers to mis-use the police will reduced by a constitutional council. But other activities say the institute of permanent secretaries should also be rebuilt. (Colombo/Jan11/2016)
